About Legacy

Stronger future at Legacy

Helping You Build a Stronger Future

At Legacy Physio and Fitness, we help people with injuries and medical conditions become stronger, fitter and more confident—without making their pain worse. We know how frustrating it is when your body no longer lets you do the things you love. Whether it's returning to the gym, playing sport, keeping up with your children or grandchildren, or simply getting through the day without pain, injuries can leave you feeling stuck.

Many of our clients have tried exercising before, only to flare up their pain. Others have received conflicting advice or have been told to simply "stop doing" the activities they enjoy.

We believe there's a better way. By combining expert physiotherapy with evidence-based strength and exercise rehabilitation in a supportive gym environment, we help you move beyond pain relief and build a stronger, more resilient body for life.

Why Legacy Exists

Legacy Physio and Fitness wasn't created from a business plan. It was born from personal experience.

While competing in surf lifesaving IRB racing, I suffered a burst fracture of my T12 vertebra after hitting a wave at speed. The injury required months in a back brace and completely changed how I viewed movement, rehabilitation and exercise.

More than five years later, I still experience back pain.

I've had to modify the sports I play, the way I train and even parts of my social life. Living through that experience taught me something no textbook ever could. Recovery isn't always about returning to the exact person you were before. Sometimes it's about becoming stronger, smarter and more resilient than you ever thought possible.

It also gave me a genuine understanding of what my clients experience every day—the frustration of setbacks, the fear of making things worse and the uncertainty of not knowing what your body is capable of anymore.

That's why I don't just treat injuries. I help people rebuild confidence in their bodies.

Why We Chose the Name "Legacy" Long before opening the clinic, I often thought about the legacy I wanted to leave behind.

One day I hope my future children don't simply remember me as someone who loved sport.

I hope they remember someone who cared deeply about helping others live healthier, stronger and more fulfilling lives.

That idea became the foundation of Legacy Physio and Fitness.

Every person who walks through our doors is working towards their own legacy.

For some, that's returning to competitive sport.

For others, it's keeping up with their children, travelling comfortably, playing with grandchildren, or simply living independently for as long as possible.

Whatever your goal looks like, we're here to help you achieve it.

Our Approach

Every person is different. Every injury is different. So your rehabilitation should be too.

Your journey begins with a comprehensive one-on-one assessment where we take the time to understand your injury, medical history, previous rehabilitation, movement patterns and personal goals.

If appropriate, hands-on physiotherapy is used to reduce pain and improve movement, creating a valuable "window of opportunity" to begin strengthening safely.

From there, we guide you through an individualised rehabilitation and strength program designed specifically for your body, your goals and your lifestyle.

Along the way, we explain the reasoning behind every stage of your rehabilitation so you develop the confidence and knowledge to manage your own body long after treatment has finished.

Our goal isn't to make you dependent on physiotherapy. Our goal is to make you independent.

Meet Dale Schalkwijk

Hi, I'm Dale, founder of Legacy Physio and Fitness.

I graduated from Macquarie University's Doctor of Physiotherapy program after completing a Bachelor of Health Science (Anatomy and Physiology).

I'm also qualified as a:

  • Personal Trainer
  • Strength and Conditioning Coach
  • Clinical Pilates Instructor
  • Sports Trainer
  • Precision Nutrition Coach

Exercise has always been a huge part of my life.

I've competed in basketball, swimming, running, surf lifesaving, underwater hockey and underwater rugby, giving me firsthand experience with both athletic performance and injury rehabilitation.

Today, I combine that experience with evidence-based physiotherapy to help people safely return to exercise, sport and the activities they love.

Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing a long-term medical condition or simply want to become stronger without aggravating existing pain, my role is to guide and support you every step of the way.

Most clients begin with one-on-one physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions before progressing into small-group strength and fitness sessions as their confidence and capacity improve.

More Than Pain Relief

At Legacy Physio and Fitness, success isn't measured by pain scores alone. Success is watching someone confidently return to the gym after years away. It's seeing a grandparent lift their grandchild without hesitation.

It's helping someone complete a holiday without worrying about their back or knees. It's giving someone the confidence to return to the sport they thought they'd never play again.

Because becoming stronger doesn't just change your body.

It changes what's possible.

And that's the legacy we want every client to leave with.
